Black Henna Temporary Tattoos Can Leave Permanent Scars
In a recent Consumer Update, the FDA has issued a warning for individuals getting a temporary tattoo.
Most temporary tattoos will last from a few days to a few weeks on the skin, depending on several factors. Unlike permanent tattoos which are injected into the skin, temporary tattoos "henna" are applied to the surface of the skin.
Most people are familiar with henna, the reddish-brownish coloring usually made from a plant. There is not much issue with this type of henna.
The issue is with the "black henna" which is being used now in the place of the traditional henna. With black henna, there is an extra ingredient, a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD), an ingredient that can cause serious skin reactions in some people. By law, PPD is not permitted in cosmetics intended to be applied to the skin.
If you are thinking of getting a temporary tattoo, avoid any places that offer black henna.
