Our laser systems can remove a variety of pigmented lesions. These lesions are usually darker in color and are found in the dermis and epidermis.
Below are examples of some dermal / epidermal lesions that can be removed safely and effectively.
Sun Spot or Age Spot, also known as Solar Lentiginos or Liver Spot
If you live in Orlando or anywhere in the "Sun-Belt" states, you may be quite familiar with sun spots.
Age Spots or Sun Spots (also known as Solar Lentiginos, Sun-Induced Freckles, or Senile Lentiginos) are dark in color (hyperpigmented): usually brown, but can range from yellow-tan to black. Age spots are caused by natural or artificial UV light. They are generally harmless, but they do indicate excessive exposure to sunlight, which is a risk factor for skin cancer. It is estimated that 90% of Whites over the age of 60 have sunspots. Read More About Sun Spot and Age Spot Removal.
Age spots are visible on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and legs. The face, hands, and arms are the first parts of the body that show the signs of aging; it's due to sun exposure. These sun-damaged blemishes are on the surface of the skin. Sun spots are easily treated and removed by laser treatment. There is no down-time and nothing that needs to be done by you. Only one or two laser treatments are necessary. You will have new, healthy, beautiful skin. No need for make up or concealer!
If you have a tan, you should wait until the tan fades before coming in for this laser procedure. After the laser treatment, the skin might experience a sunburn-like sensation which could lead to scabbing. But the skin will heal within a week and any scabbing will fall off to reveal fresh, beautiful, pristine skin!

Freckles
Freckles are flat, tanned color circular spots found on almost everyone, especially if they have fair complexion. Freckles can get darker in the summer with exposure to sunlight and lighten during the winter time with less exposure to sunlight. There are two types of freckles: simple and sunburn. Simple freckles usually occur on the face, are round and small. Sunburn freckles are usually larger, darker, have irregular edges, and occur in the shoulders and upper back.

Cafe au lait Spots
Cafe-au-lait birthmark spots are pigmented birthmarks. They do not, by themselves, pose any problems. Their color can vary from light brown to dark brown.
Becker's Nevus
Becker’s Nevus is an asymptomatic irregular tan-to-brown patch, most commonly located over the shoulder, upper chest, or back. It is a rare condition that affects men more than women.

Updates and Information
4/14/11 Pigmented Lesions in Asians In the Asian population, skin
pigmentation disorders are common. They are also more prone to
developing post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, whether after surgery,
injury, or infection.
It
is common of Asians to seek treatment for these pigmented lesions. In
the past, surgery or other forms of invasive treatments were the only
choice. However, with the advancement in laser technology, it is now
possible to effectively and safely treat these skin pigmentation
disorders. What these lasers are able to do is to treat the pigmented
lesions without damaging or destroying the surrounding tissue.
Pigmented
lesions are classified based upon where the pigmented lesions are
located: epidermis, dermis, or both. For appropriate treatment, the
right laser must be utilized.
First, let's talk about the laser that don't
work for the treatment of pigmented lesions. Carbon dioxide lasers
(10,600 nm) and Er:YAG lasers (2,940 nm) lasers are non-pigment
selective lasers which are used for laser skin resurfacing in the
treatment of wrinkles and scars. These lasers may help to remove certain
superficial pigmented lesions, but are not the best choice.
Pigment
selective lasers (non-ablative) are more accurate and precise in the
treatment of pigmented lesions which much less risk of developing
post-inflammatory pigmentation. According to the studies available, the
lasers below provide the best option for treatment of pigmented lesions:
Q-Switched Ruby Laser (694nm, 25-40 nanoseconds)
Q-Switched Alexandrite (755nm 50-100 nanoseconds)
Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser (532nm, and 1064nm 5-10 nanoseconds)
Pulse-dye laser (585/595 nm, 1.5 msec)
IPL (515/200 nm)
Choosing
the right laser and wavelength is very important in the appropriate
treatment of pigmented lesions. In our next article, we will outline why
the use of short-pulse lasers are important in the treatment of
pigmented lesions.
