Tattoos come in different shapes, sizes and colors. No two tattoos are the same.Tattoos can be classified into different types and the number of laser treatments it takes to remove the tattoo can therefore vary.
Professional Tattoos are done at tattoo shops and have high density of ink, are injected deeper into the skin and usually have multiple colors involved. Professional tattoos are done by using a "tattoo gun". Laser tattoo removal on these tattoos usually require the most number of sessions, anywhere between 8-15 sessions. It is important to know and understand that pink, yellow or lighter colors are generally much harder to remove, if not impossible. White and peach colors can turn black if lasered and then impossible to fade.
Tattoo removal on amateur tattoos are easier to remove because the amount of ink injected is much less and the ink is not so deep. A tattoo is considered amateur if a simple needle is used and dabbed into ink and the inserted into the skin. Generally speaking, it can take anywhere between 1 to 4 sessions to remove amateur tattoos. If an amateur tattoo artist uses a tattoo gun, it is considered a professional tattoo simply because they used a tool that inserts a lot of ink much deeper into the skin.
Permanent Makeup or Cosmetic Tattoo
Cosmetic makeup or Permanent makeup tattoos such as those done on the lips or eyebrows usually have less ink than professional tattoos. These types of tattoos can take anywhere between 1-6 treatments depending on the density of the ink and the type of ink used. In some instances, "organic ink" is used by the cosmetologist. If this is lasered, it can change colors. If possible, call and ask the person who did the permanent makeup tattoo about what kind of ink they used.
Traumatic tattoos can occur when foreign particles/debris is embedded into the skin. Examples include getting poked with a pencil/pen or after trauma such as a bicycle or motorcycle accident and the "road rash" that ensues afterwards. It typically takes 1 to 4 sessions to clear out "traumatic" tattoos. However, everyone is different and more sessions may be needed. Depending on how deep the pigmentation is in the skin, it may be impossible to get rid of traumatic tattoos, so be sure to have reasonable expectations.

Medicinal Tattoos are used in medicine to mark sites on the body where, among other things, radiation treatment will be utilized. Medicinal tattoos usually don't have much ink in them and take on average 1-2 laser treatments to remove.
