The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently came out with a warning against getting tattoos from non-professionals (friends, family, people getting tattoos outside of a tattoo shop).
CDC researchers found that getting a tattoo from non-professionals carry the risk of getting Hepatitis C, a blood-borne liver infection. There was no evidence that tattoos done by professionals carried Hepatitis C risk. Hepatitis C is passed from individual to individual via infected blood. In the US, about 18,000 people are newly infected each year. When getting a tattoo, there is generally a little blood loss which needs to be handled appropriately. If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, make sure it is done by a trained individual inside of a tattoo shop. As mentioned in a previous article, the state of Florida, as of January 1, 2012 has come out with new rules and regulations relating to tattoo shops. With the tighter regulations, there will hopefully be less chances of getting blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis C.
