Treatment Options for Tattoos

3/23/2011

One of the questions we are frequently asked is "What are the treatment options for getting rid of my tattoo?"

The first option is a "quick fix" which is only temporary. It involves applying specialized makeup to the area. This will "hide" the tattoo or make it look into something else. While this option is fast and inexpensive, it is temporary. After all, the tattoo is still there.

The second option is cutting out the tattoo. Yes, it involves cutting and surgery. This is done by a plastic surgeon. However, as you can imagine, this can't be done on areas of the body, especially places which are visible, such as the hands, arms, or neck. Besides its location, the size of the tattoo matters as well. The bigger the tattoo, the more chance for scarring and keloid formation. The cost of this procedure can also be expensive depending on its location and size.

The last option is laser tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal has come a long way since its inception. The laser technology has improved a lot over the past few years. With the Medlite C6 laser which we use, the chance of scarring or keloid formation is almost none, if the recommended follow-up care is done by the patient. There is virtually no down-time. With our current laser, we are able to get out almost all colors, although black and dark navy blue are probably the easiest to get out. Although laser tattoo removal will generally take months and require multiple treatments, it is only about 30 minutes of your time once every 4-6 weeks. It can even be done during your lunch break and you can go back to work afterwards.

Things to Know about Laser Treatments

3/11/2011

It is very important for our patients to be aware of potential problems with laser tattoo removal or laser hair removal. It is important to remember that for laser tattoo removal, the laser targets the ink pigments in the skin. For laser hair removal, it targets the melanin (dark pigment) in the hair follicle. Anything that interferes with this can either reduce efficacy of treatment or cause problems.

Although laser treatments are safe and effective, there are certain things that must be observed. The most important thing to remember is to stay out of the sun before and after treatments. If someone’s skin is exposed to the sun before treatment, he/she will develop a tan. Tanning occurs when the melanocytes of the skin produce melanin. If there is extra melanin in the skin before laser treatment, the laser’s beam will not be as effective in targeting the melanin in the hair or the tattoo ink. After laser treatment, the skin is very sensitive. Exposure of skin to excessive sunlight after laser treatment may lead to sunburn, irritation or blistering. The best way to prevent this from happening is to cover the treated area and/or apply sunscreen of SPF30 or greater.

Laser Tattoo Removal hits Reality Show

Laser tattoo removal has found its way onto a reality show now. The "Real Housewives of Orange County" Season 6 episode 1, featured Tamra having laser tattoo removal on her ring finger and lower back. For those that follow the show, Tamra got her husband's name Simon tattooed on her ring finger a while ago. It was to be "forever". Now that she is divorced, she wants his name removed off her ring finger as well as the tattoo that matched Simon's tattoo on his arm.

The tattoo on her back should be fairly easy to remove as it is black in color. The tattoo on her ring finger which is pink is going to take more laser tattoo removal sessions to remove compared to something darker.

More and more people are choosing to erase the memory of people/mistakes from their lives by having laser tattoo removal. If you live in the Orlando or Central Florida area and would like to have laser tattoo removal, call us for a free consultation at 407-494-0404. At Pristine Laser Center, we help people who want to erase bad memories from their skin.

Tattoo removal with creams

3/4/2011

One of the most common questions we are asked is whether or not the "tattoo removal creams" that you see and hear about actually work or not. The short answer is "No". We have so many people who come to us who have tried the creams and tell us that they tried that product and it was absolutely a waste of time and money. The wrecking balms, as they are called, claim to get rid of the ink from the tattoo. But as we have written before, anything that you apply to your skin only goes to the top layer of your skin, the epidermis. The ink from tattoo are not in the top layer, otherwise, the tattoo would go away after you wash your skin so many times. The ink is deeper inside. The only way you can deliver a cream to the area is if you actually got rid of the epidermis and went into the dermis.

Most of us know what happens when you strip the skin of the epidermis: It hurts! You reach the dermis which has blood vessels and nerves. Ever cut yourself or get a paper-cut? If there was bleeding, you went through the epidermis and reached the dermis. If you didn't bleed, you only went epidermis-deep. So how can a cream go through the epidermis to reach the dermis and then get rid of the ink there?! That is why the wrecking balms don't work.

So what about the laser? Well, to put it in simple terms the laser penetrates the epidermis and goes to the dermis where the ink is sitting and it "blasts" the ink into smaller pieces. It doesn't cut or damage the epidermis. Contrary to what you may have heard about laser tattoo removal, the laser actually doesn't cause any bleeding. It is a bit uncomfortable. Some patients describe it as a feeling of being zapped with a rubber-band. But we cool the skin, so it reduces the discomfort.

Why waste your time and money with things that won't get rid of your tattoo? Laser tattoo removal is your best option.
