Regulators Warn of Counterfeit Botox
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that it had warned some 350 medical practices last week about potentially counterfeit version of Botox from a network of sellers controlled by an international supplier known as Canada Drugs.
This is not the first time that the FDA has alerted doctors about potentially counterfeit drugs from Canada Drugs.
Allergan, the company that makes Botox has stated that they "can not confirm the safety or authenticity of products that are imported from unauthorized distributors." Allergan sells genuine Botox to doctors for $525 per vial.
Botox or Botulinum toxin has been used cosmetically to relax frown lines and get rid of wrinkles. If used incorrectly, it could lead to serious medical complications.
Some practices may try to reduce their costs by purchasing Botox from unauthorized suppliers, putting the lives of patients at risk. Others may dilute the product or reuse leftover product so as to not "waste" any Botox.
You should be careful about where you go to get Botox. Make sure it is a medical office, not a spa or other establishments that are not medical facilities.
