A New Strength of Retin-A Microgel Approved
The FDA has approved a new strength of Retin-A (tretinoin) microsphere 0.08% made by Valeant. Tretinoins are indicated for the treatment of acne vulgaris.
It is thought that tretinoins work by modifying abnormal follicular keratinization. By increasing the mitotic activity of follicular epithelia, tretinoin increase the turnover rate of thin, loosely-adherent corneocytes. Through these actions, the comedo contents are extruded and the formation of the microcomedo, the precursor lesion of acne vulgaris, is reduced.
Retin-A microgel is currently available is 0.04% and 0.1% strength. The new 0.08% strength microgel will soon be available.

It is very important for our patients to be aware of potential problems with laser tattoo removal or laser hair removal. It is important to remember that for laser tattoo removal, the laser targets the ink pigments in the skin. For laser hair removal, it targets the melanin (dark pigment) in the hair follicle. Anything that interferes with this can either reduce efficacy of treatment or cause problems.
Although laser treatments are safe and effective, there are certain things that must be observed. The most important thing to remember is to stay out of the sun before and after treatments. If someone’s skin is exposed to the sun before treatment, he/she will develop a tan. Tanning occurs when the melanocytes of the skin produce melanin. If there is extra melanin in the skin before laser treatment, the laser’s beam will not be as effective in targeting the melanin in the hair or the tattoo ink. After laser treatment, the skin is very sensitive. Exposure of skin to excessive sunlight after laser treatment may lead to sunburn, irritation or blistering. The best way to prevent this from happening is to cover the treated area and/or apply sunscreen of SPF30 or greater.

In the United States, about 15% of adult women suffer from acne. Physicians are seeing an increase in the number of women who are having acne in their 30's, 40's and 50's. Unfortunately, treating these acne lesions is difficult. In this population, topical medications may not work very well. And unlike teenagers who typically have friends with acne (and they are expected to have acne), female adults who have acne can suffer from psychological problems. Acne in the adult population can effect motherhood, work, and cause a midlife crisis.
Because topical agents don't work very well, most physicians prescribe oral antibiotic medication such as doxycycline. Although doxycycline doesn't kill the bacteria causing the acne, it does have anti-inflammatory effect which helps in reducing the redness and gradually improve the acne.
But the antibiotic is not without its side-effect. Some women will suffer from a yeast infection every time they day oral antibiotics. So where does this leave adult patients suffering from acne?
The other option is oral hormonal contraceptives. There are a variety of options available. The down-side of this choice is that it may take months for the medication to work. And some women do not want to take hormones for various reasons.
Besides topical and oral medication, Pristine Laser Center offers laser treatment for the treatment of acne. The laser treatment kills the bacteria causing the acne as well as reduce the amount of sebum produced by the sabaceous glands which overall lead to less acne formation. The laser treatment for acne will take several sessions to take full effect. If you suffer from acne, call Pristine Laser Center at 407-494-0404 for a consultation.
In the medical community, the connection between acne and depression has been well established, especially amongst teenagers. It is well known that acne, particularly in teenagers, can cause depression. Most teenagers are very cognizant of how they look; their self-esteem is based upon how they look. They may feel so bad about their acne that they refrain from making friends, become lonely, have low self-esteem and ultimately fall into depression. Therefore, it is very important to deal with the acne so they can have clean, clear skin which may make them feel better about themselves.
At Pristine Laser Center, we utilize a variety of methods including topical and oral prescription medications, acne treatment kits, as well as laser treatments to help control and clear your skin. Sometimes acne can leave you with scars and we can help get rid of those scars with laser treatments as well. If you are suffering from acne or acne scars, call us today at 407-494-0404 to schedule an appointment. Isn't it time you had pristine skin?
You already know that smoking is bad for your health, causing lung cancer and other health issues. You also know that smoking causes wrinkling and dehydration of the skin, as well as a dull complexion. In a new study published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, smoking cigarettesis now linked to comedonal postadolescent acne (CPAA), a type of acne that is most common in adult females. The study determined that nearly 73 percent of the adult women with CPAA who participated were smokers. The study states that "CPAA appears as the most frequent clinical form of postadolescent acne and seems to be strictly correlated with cigarette smoking.”
So if you are a smoker and suffer from acne, here is another reason for you to quit smoking. Call Pristine Laser Center at 407-494-0404 for a consultation.
