What are Sun spots?

Sun spots are hyperpigmented (increase amount of pigment) areas on our skin. Sun spots are also known as age spots, senile freckles, and liver spots. In the past, it was thought that people who had these areas of hyperpigmentation suffered from liver disease. But we now know that is incorrect.

Sun spots generally range in color from red to brown to black. For most people, they are brown in color. Sun spots generally occur in areas exposed to the sun, such as the hands (from driving), face (especially on the left side of the face if you drive a lot), shoulders, forearms, arms, and neck. For men who are bald, it can also occur on the scalp. It can occur anywhere on the body exposed to the sun.

What causes sun spots?

If you live in Orlando, or any parts of Florida, Arizona, and Southern California, you are exposed to a much higher amount of ultra-violet (UV) radiation compared to other parts of the country. With this increased amount of exposure to UV radiation, there is damage to our skin.

When we are young, our skin tends to heal from this damage much more quickly. As we age, this skin damage from UV radiation tends to accumulate. Around the age of 40, our body is no longer able to effectively heal this damage and our skin starts to show signs UV damage. Certain parts of our skin start to get darker. This is especially true of people who live in the warmer climates such as Orlando.

What are my treatment options for removing sun spots?

Sun spots are generally harmless. Some people choose to live with them. However, most people want to get rid of them.

There are several options for removing sun spots. Sun spots do respond to liquid nitrogen application. Another option would be to apply Tretinoin cream 0.1% for at least 10 months. It must be said that women who are pregnant or are thinking about becoming pregnant should not use Tretinoin cream.

The best option for removing sun spots is with laser. Usually, only one treatment is needed. The procedure is quick and almost painless. Response is usually within a week. For darker sun spots, a second treatment may be needed.
