Tattoo Ink Can Cause Infections
Did you know that there is no law or regulation that requires tattoo ink to be sterile?! In previous articles, we discussed how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) whose job is to oversee foods and drug safety, does not regulate tattoo ink!
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has come out calling for higher standards. Why? Because more than 20 people were recently infection with a horrible skin infection from an organism called Mycobacterium chelnoae.
Investigators were able to track down and find the source of the of the Mycobacterium chelonae infection: premixed gray ink that were produced in Arizona. The company has since recalled the ink.
Due to the lack of regulations, tattoo parlors could be purchasing their tattoo ink from almost anywhere, usually at the cheapest price possible. It is very surprising to see that something that is being injected into the body has no FDA oversight!
It is therefore very important to go to a reputable tattoo parlor. Ask them what kind of ink they are using and where they purchase it from.
