10 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Laser Center
1. Who Operates The Laser? Is it a Physician? A Physician's Assistant? A Nurse Practitioner? A Nurse? A Tech? An Esthetician? State laws and regulations are lax and almost all facilities cut corners and hire techs or estheticians to operate their lasers. At most facilities, you will never see the doctor and will never be evaluated by one. Be careful!
2. What Kind of a Laser Do They Have? There are different types of lasers for different procedures. Lasers have come a long way and continue to get better as the technology gets better. There are some cheap lasers on the market which are being used by some facilities. These lasers have a higher rate of burning and scarring. They also may require more sessions and not give you good results.

3. Who is the Medical Director That Oversees the Operations?
All facilities operating a laser or offering aesthetic treatments are required to have a medical director, a physician. Ask to speak to them and be evaluated by them. Chances are the medical director's name and picture are listed, but they are nowhere to be found. The medical director may only come in to the office once in a while. The medical director can be on vacation. If you can't meet with the medical director, be very careful.
4. Do They Own or Rent Their Laser?
There are a lot of Med Spas that will rent their machine once a month or once a week and line up patients for laser procedures. If they are performing a procedure once a month, how good can they be at what they're doing?! Also, they may own an out-dated or cheap laser which they bought from China. Do you really want to take that chance?! If you do ask, they will probably not be honest, but you can follow up with the next question.
5. What Days Can I Come in for My Laser Session?
The Med Spas that rent their machines will only schedule you for certain days because that is the day they rent their laser. Also, does that work for your schedule if they can only do it on a specific day?
6. Is The Price Quoted Only Good For the First Session or For All Sessions Afterwards?
Some Med Spas just want to get you in the door by offering you a "teaser rates". That entices you to start the process and then they will raise the price for subsequent treatments. Be sure you know what you will be paying for each session.
7. Have They Run a Groupon or Daily Deal Recently?
Ask yourself what the purpose of Groupon or daily deals are? It is a way for a business to get a quick burst of cash into the business. Why? Because they are struggling financially and need a boost. Hundreds of people sign up for the deal which overwhelms the business. This erodes patient care. The patient becomes just a number for the business. When the patient is just another number, staff will get careless which leads to accidents including burning and scarring. Most studies show that customers are unhappy with the level of service they receive from facilities offering daily deals. You might also have a difficult time getting an appointment because of Groupon deals.
8. Do I have to Pay for Anything Else?
Have you ever thought you were buying something at one price only to be “nickel-and-dimed” and ended up paying more? A lot of places will give you one price and then ask you to pay more for ointments, numbing creams, accessories. They will also "up-sell". That is not ethical! Do you want to go somewhere where their goal is to just sell you things?
9. Can You Guarantee Results?
Even world-renowned physicians and medical facilities won't guarantee results because they know and understand that complications and issues might arise. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
10. Ask Yourself If You Feel Comfortable In the Facility?
If everything else checks out fine, ask yourself if you feel comfortable with that facility. A lot of times, there is a little voice that will tell you to proceed or not. Listen to it.
