Laser Spider Vein Removal

Picture
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are superficial small varicose veins that can be found mostly on the lower body (legs, thighs, ankles, feet). They can be blue, red or purplish in color. They usually appear as tree branches or spiderwebs and they can look like jagged lines. Spider veins are common in both men and women. Some spider veins appear on the face and particularly on the nose. Spider veins are generally harmless, but most people wish to get rid of them because of cosmetic reasons.

The good news is that Pristine Laser Center in Orlando can help you get rid of those spider veins to help your skin look pristine!

Why do I have spider veins in the legs?

The main reason is damage to the valves in the veins due to body weight on the legs, gravity, and the fact that blood in the legs must travel up the body to get back to the heart.

What are some risk factors for getting spider veins?

  • Age: As we get older, the valves in the veins start to weaken and don't work as well.
  • Family History: Vascular issues can be genetic and usually runs in families.
  • Obesity: Carrying extra weight puts pressure on the legs and weakens the valves in the veins
  • Hormones: Birth control pills and other medications that contain estrogen or progesterone can contribute to spider veins
  • Pregnancy: Extra blood in the body, extra weight, and hormone changes put pressure on the valves in veins
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Sitting or standing still for long periods of time puts extra pressure on the veins
  • Sun Exposure: In fair-skin individuals, prolonged sun exposure can cause spider veins on the nose and face.

How does Laser Vein Removal Work?

Spider vein and smaller varicose veins can be treated with a special laser in 2 ways: a) the vein can be broken up into smaller pieces and destroyed or b) they can be heated and shrunk and thus destroyed.

There are no needles or incisions required. The laser penetrates the skin to reach the targeted veins. 1-3 treatments may be needed. The laser treatments last between 15-30 minutes (depends on the size of the area). Laser treatment is not effective for very large varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is effective for that.
