Orlando's Vascular Lesion Treatment Experts

What is a "Vascular" Lesion?

"Vascular" means something that is filled with blood like little red dots (otherwise known as Cherry Angiomas), veins, reddish/brownish birthmarks (like Port-wine stains). Vascular lesions are marks and areas of the skin that have a sometimes reddish, brownish, or bluish coloring to them because they have or have had blood flowing to them at one time. They can sometimes be lighter or darker in color. They can be found all over the face and body. Sometimes, people are born with them and therefore they are referred to as birthmarks. They can develop on the skin over time randomly, due to another health condition, or because of an injury to the area.

A Port-Wine Stain Birthmark
Port-Wine Stain Birthmark

Port-Wine Stain Birthmark is a vascular lesion which consists of both superficial and deep dilated capillaries. They look red/purple in color. It is present at birth and lasts throughout life. It occurs in roughly 0.4% of people, roughly 4 out of 1000 people.

Port-Wine stains are sharply demarcated red macules or patches. They often change color from red at birth to dark-red in adolescence and violaceous as the person gets older. The reason for the title "Port-Wine stains" is because of the purplish red color of the legion.

Port-Wine stains can occur anywhere on the body, but the most common site is the face and usually unilateral and segmental. They do tend to grow with the child and last throughout life.
Telangiectasia

Telangiectasias are small dilated blood vessels that are near the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. They can measure anywhere from 0.5 and 1 millimeter in diameter. Telangiectasias are most commonly on the face: around the nose, cheeks, and chin. They can also develop on the legs, specifically on the upper thigh, below the knee, and around the ankles.

Spider Angioma

Spider Angiomas, aka Spider nevi or spider telangiectasia are a type of telangiectasia. They are found beneath the skin, with a central red spot and red extensions that come out, making it look like a spider’s web.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are small damaged veins that can appear on the surface of the skin, especially on the legs and face. They are usually not painful and are harmless. Some people want them removed due to cosmetic purposes though.

What Causes Spider Veins?
  • Genetics: Most people with spider veins have a family history of them.
  • Pregnancy: Sometimes they show up during pregnancy. Some women notice that they disappear after pregnancy, but they can become permanent.
  • Being female: Women tend to get them more often than men.
  • Being older: As we age, the muscles in our lower legs may lose some of their strength resulting in Spider Veins.
  • Extra body weight: Being overweight can place added pressure on leg veins causing this issue.
  • Hormones: Hormonal birth control and hormonal treatments for menopause may increase the risk of spider veins.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods: Veins in the legs have to work harder when a person remains in the same position for a long time. This can cause Spider Veins to worsen.
  • Old blood clots or vein damage
  • Excess pressure in the face: This can be due to forceful coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or as a result of the pressures of childbirth.
  • Sun damage: UV light from the sun can damage the skin and cause broken blood vessels or spider veins, especially on the face.
